Here's what we were working with - a narrow, uneven dirt path running along the side of the house between the back door and the garage. No real surface to walk on, just compacted soil that turned into a muddy mess every time it rained. The grading in that area wasn't doing the yard any favors either, so water had nowhere useful to go.

We brought in the skid steer to excavate the area properly. That's the part most people don't see - the grading work that happens underneath before a single paver gets set. Getting the base right is everything. Skip that step and you end up with a path that shifts, settles, and holds water in all the wrong places.

Once the base was dialed in, we laid a full permeable paver walkway running the length of the house. The joint spacing between the pavers allows water to filter down through the base instead of pooling on the surface. So this path isn't just wider and cleaner to walk on - it's actively helping manage water in the backyard every time it rains.

That's really what good hardscaping comes down to. It should look great, but it should also solve something. A walkway that handles foot traffic and drainage at the same time? That's a win on both fronts. We also tied the path into the existing back entry steps, so the whole route from the door to the garage feels intentional and connected.

If you've got a side yard or backyard path that's more of a problem than a solution, permeable pavers are worth a serious look. The function is built right into the design.
